American data storage company Seagate Technology PLC was first established in 1978 as Shugart Technology. They have developed their first 5.25-inch hard disk drive named 5-megabyte ST-506, in 1980. After the introduction of the IBM XT in 1983 they were the major supplier in the microcomputer market. Presently Seagate and Western Digital dominates the HDD market mainly through their acquisition of competitors. Seagate acquired Control Data Corporation's Imprimis division in 1989, Conner Peripherals in 1996, Maxtor in 2006 and Samsung's HDD business in 2011.
